Dash 1 asked me an interesting question last year. He asked why we fly a flag on our front porch. I explained what the American flag means, how his father serves, proudly, under that flag, how many others have fought and sacrificed so much for all that the flag stands for...for freedom.
He took my answer to heart, looking very seriously while I talked, he then asked, so then what country the bear flag stand for.
The bear flag?
"You know those bear flags that you see on houses with the flowers on them", he said.
I realized that he meant those seasonal type of novelty flags and well unless there is a new country out there who's flag is a bear wearing a straw hat holding a sunflower I'm pretty sure its just for decoration.
Then came another great question, "well why doesn't everyone fly an American flag like ours?"
And for that I didn't have an answer. Why doesn't everyone fly a flag?
We live on a long country road and I think I can count on one hand the number of American flags I see. This disturbs me. I see a Puerto Rican flag, a Yankees flag, a Confederate flag, and a couple of those damn bear flags, which I understand, many find adorable, but not so many American flags.
I remember back to right after 9-11 the American Flag was everywhere.... and now.... not so much.
Even if you have disagreements with the politics or what have you, you have to admit, we live in a pretty damn amazing country. Why not show pride in your country and fly the flag out of respect for those who serve to keep us free, for those who have sacrificed?
Inquiring minds want to know.... do you all fly a flag?
Well, do I have a solution for one of you.
A GIVEAWAY! And to me it seems rather fitting that it falls over Memorial Day weekend.
A free flag!
CVS Flags {check them out here} is offering to one of you lucky gals {or guys... do any guys read my blog?} your choice of either an American Flag or a military flag in the standard 3x 5 size.
Hop over to their site and look around. They have tons of beautiful flags {I'm thinking about getting flyboy a Gasden flag for father's day, nothing says happy dad's day like a Don't Tread On Me Flag right?} no doubt if you're looking for a flag, they will have it.
And if you already have an American flag and a military flag, enter anyways and give the flag to someone else so that there is one more Flag flying out there.
So to enter here are the rules:
{don't forget to leave a separate comment for each entry}
first entry- let me know which flag you think you would like {and whether or not you have a flag if you want to answer that question}
second entry- tweet about the giveaway
third entry- blog about giveaway
fourth entry- follow the ol' blogoro of mine
This giveaway will be open till Tuesday June 1 until 6pm so spread the word and lets get some flags a flyin!
Long Overdue

I LOVE the idea of this giveaway. I have been thinking that I need to get an American flag for my new apartment to fly or display inside. So this would be perfect (and even if I don't win, I'll probably be getting one for myself and one for P).
ReplyDeleteAnd I follow you! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I managed to blog about it too. :)
ReplyDeleteOh goodness! I love this giveaway! And I completely agree with the whole flag thing. I'll never forget last Memorial Day. I pulled up to one of my client's house for the last day of work before I drove out to TX to welcome Scott home. They had put up an American flag and I almost cried when I saw it. I was just telling Scott that as soon as we have a house (whether we buy or rent) I want to buy an American flag and a SC state flag and fly them proudly. So to answer your question... no we don't have one yet, but it was always our intention to buy one as soon as we lived somewhere we could fly it!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a follower! :)
ReplyDeleteWe are an Army family, so we do fly one every day :) I'd love to get a POW/MIA flag to fly as well!
ReplyDeleteI tweeted the contest @anarchica
ReplyDeleteI think it is important to fly an American flag on the house. I understand the idea of not being able to install a flagpole or whatever but for those people who fly the decorative flags (my mother in law)... well, that does kinda bother me. If you really want that "bear holding a sunflower" get a 2nd pole and ALWAYS make sure that the other flag is smaller than the American flag. Just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway, I do not need to partake in it, because I already have my flag and a Navy flag on our house, but I think it's wonderful that you are doing this. Good for you
I fly my American Flag on holidays (Memorial, Flag Day, July 4th, etc) and the "bear" flag other times (depending on the season).
ReplyDeleteI was flying it always, but felt that by making a point to change it appropriately, it made it more special.
We have a BEAUTIFUL, big American flag that has been flying on our house since we moved in about four years ago. I love my flag. It makes me proud and very happy to see it blowing in the breeze everyday.
ReplyDeleteMy outdoor and family room decor are all Americana as well (but you knew this).
I don't understand the folks who aren't proud of our country.
Great give away :) ♥
Sadly, we don't have an outdoor flag YET...so I'd LOVE to win one! We just moved into this house, and since we rent, we were debating on whether or not to attach a flag holder to the brick outside. Just this past week we decided to go ahead and do it. Now all we need is the flag :)
ReplyDeleteLike Penny, I have a lot of Americana stuff in our home. And, a framed flag that flew with my husband as he fought in Afghanistan has a place of honor. I love this give-away, and pray that as the war continues overseas, more people will remember the sacrifice of our servicemen...and will honor them by flying the flag.
I would love the American Flag. I currently do not fly a flag because i still live with my parents who dont but when my husband and I move out in 8 days and get to where we are gonna be, we will fly a flag proudly!
ReplyDeleteI would retweet this but I dont know how?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI posted a blog about this on my blog over at http://afwifey4lifey.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI now follow your blog. BTW I love your page... it is so cute!
ReplyDeleteWe have nowhere to fly a flag outside because we live in an apartment complex, but we have a bunch inside! We have a photo with Mickey Mouse saluting the American Flag in our house, we have the MC flag blanket-size, we have a Santa with an American flag for Christmas time, and a few others.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway though!
i'd love a new USMC Flag or USA flag. we fly both at our house. it gives me a feeling of honor and pride. i love my country I love my Corps. BTW: i also follow you!
ReplyDeleteWe live in rental housing, so we can't drill a flag holder on the front of the house. BUT... we proudly display a mini American Flag & a mini Marine Corps Flag in a cute holder in the front window.
ReplyDeleteWe fly an "America Flag" ,as my little boy calls it, from a bracket on the house. We don't have an Army flag, so that would be nice. We plan to install a big flag pole in the yard in the near future. If the giveaway included a Gadsden flag I would take one of those. My neighbor flies one below her US Flag on her flag pole. A few other neighbors on the street have flags as well, but not many. Thankfully, no bears with hats around here, just the bear on the state flag.
ReplyDeleteWe have an American flag out every day. And Skip and I were JUST talking about how we want to get a Marine Corps flag too. So that is what I would like if we win!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower too!
ReplyDeleteWe fly an American flag everyday. We also have a small, garden-sized "bear" flag. I'd love to have the Betsy Ross flag if I were to win! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower, too! :) Love the Betsy Ross flag!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a flag, but I'd love one. Almost bought one today but our @sshat landlords won't let us put a flagpole up. I'd get either an American or a Navy flag. Probably the American flag first.
ReplyDeleteAnd I tweeted about it! http://twitter.com/WifeyofaSailor/status/15009095171
ReplyDeleteAnd I already follow your blog... naturally!
ReplyDeleteI just bought an American flag because it seemed like a necessity for Memorial Day. (Chris has been hesitant to get one because he thinks I'll make him do colors twice a day every day.) I'd take the Navy flag though!
ReplyDeleteAnd I already follow your blog :)
ReplyDeleteKudos to you for hosting this giveaway and spreading the word about CVS flags ...they have a wonderful selection and I have bookmarked them. I fly the American flag everyday but if I win that is the one I would choose. I also like their selection of state flags; I may order one of those too. Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I am now a follower. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI am following you on twitter and I tweeted your blog and flag giveaway. :) ROCK. ON.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I can not wait for the day we get to fly a flag on our home. It was funny when we moved to this state and had to get new license plates the hubby "pondered" getting veteran plates for his car I told him "Hell yeah you should get veteran plates wear that badge proud"
ReplyDeleteI love this giveaway! We need a new American flag so that's the one I'd choose!. I'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteWe don't fly a flag outside because it's not our house really and we don't have a way to display it properly. There are several in the house, though, so I just wanted to comment but not enter the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteFunny thing, though, when I read the part about your son asking about the bear flag, at first I was wondering where he'd seen the California State flag. I've seen those decorative flags but no bear ones.
When my niece was younger, every time she saw an American flag, she would point to it proudly and say, "That's where Uncle Greg works!" So apparently Greg worked at people's homes, car dealerships, amusement parks, the entrance to housing developments......
We have always flown the American flag. I never failed to feel proud when my sweetie or I put it out in the morning, and I love that the Google Maps photo of our Kansas house showed it.
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm living in someone else's country (in a house that's not ours), though, I don't feel comfortable doing that. But it's still flying in my heart.
I just tweeted about it!
ReplyDeleteI love a good 'ole fashioned American Flag! What a great idea for a giveaway!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to have an American flag! I feel like the worst milwife in the world that we don't have one yet... (yikes!)
ReplyDeleteand I'm totally a follower :)
ReplyDeleteI want the american flag
ReplyDeleteblog follower
ReplyDeleteI dont have a flag bc our complex doesnt allow them. We did have one in MD though and my parents had one for awhile but it needs to be replaced... Once we move to NJ I'll be getting another one
