Are shorts timeless?

Weigh in here folks.

Whats the verdict on shorts?  A do or a don't?

You guys are wondering what the hell I'm talking about aren't you?

Let me explain.... today it is 91 degrees up here in the Northeast as just a smidge less humid than it would be in Manilla.  Its miserable.  And of course, today was dash2's little bike a thon at his nursery school.  Seeing as though it was 11 and feeling like it was the underarms of the tropics outside, I wore shorts, as I do pretty much all damn summer.

Here's the thing, I was the only one wearing shorts.

It was hot people.  Way to hot for pants. Or capris.

Which a little sidenote on capris, they are adorable and I do have a pair or two but come on! They are only a couple of inches shorter than jeans, even in lighter material they aren't THAT much cooler.

In fact it was hot enough that if I was 20 pounds lighter I'd have stood their in my bathing suit, although I am sure that would have been horribly inappropriate and mildly embarrassing to dash2.

So I'm curious.... after a certain age do women retire their shorts?  Cause I am NOT on board with that. As long as a pair of shorts cover my ass, I'm struttin my stuff.

Flyboy and I were talking about this today and he finds this curious, if you can do it tastefully, why not wear shorts?  Granted, everyone has their body part that they are self concious about, I'm not a fan of my upper arms whereas my legs have never bothered me.  I'm hardly a size 4 but I'm not in the plus sizes either, but then again, I see plenty of plus sizes girls rockin the shorts at the mall the other day.

So what's your take on this.... do shorts have an age limit?

  1. In short (ha ha! I crack myself up), no. I do think good taste would dictate that there is an age limit for booty shorts, and that is about eighteen. ;-P

  2. It's everywhere. In Georgia it was like 98 degrees and 98% humidity, and I still saw women out wearing jeans. Just looking at them gave me heat exhaustion. Now, I do wear capris in the summer if it's been too long since I've shaved, or if we're going to church or somewhere where there was going to be monster A/C, like the movies. So, it's conditional. But no, I don't understand jeans in the summer, either.

  3. Shorty short have an age limit. As we get old shorts get a little longer but I'm 30 and will wear shorts with a 4" length. I tend to wear more skirts because they look nicer but when it comes time to chase my kid around I see no problem with shorts.

  4. I have very white legs that burn very easily so I tend to always wear pants. However as long as your butt isn't hanging out of your shorts you can wear them at any age.

  5. I'm a plus size and I just bought 4 pairs of shorts yesterday. They are a decent length because trust me: if I don't want to see it on some other fatty, I don't want to make people see it on me.

Know your comfort level and if you're comfortable with showing your legs- have at it! I just think as we get older, they get a little longer. I don'tsee anything wrong with a pair of khaki bermuda shors or even mid thigh if you're comfortable!

I agree- no booty shorts after about 20, but wear shorts all summer-it's too gosh darn hot not too!

  6. I think little tiny shorts look gross on even little tiny girls, but other than that? I would wear what's comfortable, and jeans just don't cut it in 90 degree weather!

  7. I agree that shorty shorts definitely have an age range (I'm not letting the Captain wear them for a loooong time) but regular shorts? No. I don't wear them because I have big fat legs that are blindingly white, so even where we live, I'll wear the longer capris.

  8. Short shorts are out... esp. when older, but my mom is almost 50 and she rocks the mid-thigh shorts and they look good! I think if you're comfortable wearing them- wear them! Maybe you'll get other people to open their eyes to a "new" possibility =)

  9. Agreed with above! Booty shorts should just never be worn by anyone, IMHO. But a mid-length short, heck yes I will rock that til I'm so old all I wear is matching track suit tops and bottoms. :)

During the summer here I will go months without putting on a pair of jeans. I still have to take a sweater to the movie theater and other overly-airconditioned places, but no jeans. That's what I enjoy most about my trips up north during summer time!

  10. I start to feel a little crazy if I am too hot in my clothes. I just can't wear jeans when it is super hot out. I guess we could just wear skirts but that can be hard to wear with 3 crazy boys...lol

  11. I love shorts and capris i could not wear pants in the summer. I am giving away all my short shorts i'm to old for them

  12. Gawd I hope not.

That said - the only pairs of shorts I own currently are shorties because I'm the Queen of Hand Me Downs (and yes I'm 26 and that's just sad, but thrifty is as thrifty does). I have one pair that exit the house (ahem, also, that's the only pair that fits. ((DY Winter 15)). My only hesitation w/ wearing shorts is that my cellulite shows and so do my stretchmarks ((that's what I get for gaining 60lbs w/ my first baby)).

So. My answer was: I don't care if they are or aren't. It's hotter than Satan's armpit and if I can't run naked, I'll stick w/ shorts.

  13. I don't think so. Maybe they aren't as confident with their bodies as you are. I'm a bit nervous wearing shorts still, but I can't wait to get these thighs down a couple more sizes and through on some shorts.

  14. Well, I don't think I've ever seen an 80 year old in shorts, so maybe there is an age limit. But I don't know what that number is!! ha ha!

I don't personally wear shorts anywhere because I don't feel comfortable in them---fat, ugly, blindingly white legs....but I wear capris almost exclusively all summer long. I do pull out jeans for church or evenings out w/ the honey.

Like the others said, no short booty shorts (Daisy Dukes, as they were called when I was in high school!) for the over 20 crowd.....but otherwise, shorts in good taste are good for any age!

  15. As many have said, I think it's in the execution -- there's no age limit, only a taste limit (which seems to mean different things to different people, if an average day at the PX is any indication). Personally, I prefer skirts on hot days, but I'm not chasing three young boys around, either.

  16. I'd say it's all in what you're comfortable with. If you can do shorts, I say by all means wear 'em! I do not, however, look good in them. Things that hit me just below the knee, though, for some reason work, so capris it is. And, yeah, after having kids, it's just not the same anymore.

Interestingly enough, here in the Bahamas, you see everything. I have more than one pair of light weight, long pants I'll wear when I need to be outside for a long time. I'd rather do that than try to keep the biting flies away with bug spray that may or may not work. I also think if you can keep the sun off you, sometimes that's better than baring more. Like those nomads in the desert that cover up completely.

  17. New follower here. I found you because of your eggless blueberry muffin recipe posted on "Life as we know it" a few years ago... Yea google.

I'm also a military wife with a kiddo who's allergic to eggs. Thanks for the recipe! :)

I think sensible shorts are perfectly fine! I wore some to the zoo today and there were lots of Moms sporting shorts.

  18. I don't know if they have an age limit, but I'm not comfortable wearing shorts in public. I love me a twirly skirt! It's loose, feminine and there's a whole lot more airflow going on. :)

  19. When other people are around me in shorts & tank tops, I'm wearing pants & long-sleeve shirts, so I say go with what your most comfortable with.

  20. I really enjoy your blog, and am trying to be better at my own! But to answer your question, I don't think there's an age limit. I don't wear them very often unless they hit right at, or a little above my knee, just because I personally don't feel really comfortable showing off my legs. I did break out my light weight capri pants, only to put the jeans back on because it's cold here again. But I do have to say, there are some older ladies who can pull shorts off like nobodies business!

  21. I wonder about this constantly. Were stationed in Hawaii, its warm year round, so I wear shorts year round. All the time I see women wearing pants out...?? I think a lot of women don't like their legs enough to wear shorts. I'm not fond of my thighs, but I don't care. I would rather be comfortable. I do wear capris sometimes but not if I'm going to be outside.

Always nice to find another Marine Wife! Following you on GFC and Twitter and subscribed!

  22. I have a very high tolerance for heat, so I usually go with capris, but I do have a few pairs of shorts that go to my knees. I'm nearly 34, so if you're too old, I am too! :)

  23. I decided a few years ago I was past my expiration date for shorts. It's a personal decision. I like skirts and dresses (past the knee, for the same reason) when it's hot out. Much cooler than shorts and wedgie-free.
